Using Google My Maps

As a very regular user of GoogleMaps, I found using MyMaps very comparable in ease and style. The tutorial here was very easy to follow along with and pointed out different ways to make your map unique and individualized. I enjoyed being a ble to have the different layers (or categories) to group similar areas of my choosing. Within the layers, having the ability to easily identify location or layers by different color or image markers helps make my map unique to my purpose and how I want to present the material. This also makes finding specific areas easier when zoomed out of the immediate area. Additionally, I liked being able to attach photos to the places marked, for a quick glimpse or reminder. This is a great resource to use for learning about an area or documenting places for your own account. References Agrawal, N. (n.d.) Ecology and the Study of Singapore

Here is a presentation about general information on ecology as well as that of Singapore.

The Importance of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is important for numerous reasons. In order to understand how or why it is important, we need to understand the different components that make up biodiversity. In its most basic understanding, biodiversity is the many variations of all species, the genetic differences between individuals within a species, and the ecosystems where species live and all of these “... are necessary for the continued survival of life as we know it, and all are important to people” (Primack, 2014).  Image from Primack 2014.  A species can is defined as a group of individuals that looks and is different from other groups, a group that can also breed among themselves and don’t breed with other individuals of other groups, and a group that has similarities in DNA and their evolutionary past (Primack, 2014). The number of species found within a specific location is called species richness and this can be further examined by where on Earth these species are found. For example, there is more species r

Studying Singapore

Located on the southern end of the Malay Peninsula, the Republic of Singapore, is a unique area to analyze biodiversity. Most tropical areas are rich in biodiversity and species richness, and while Singapore has tens of thousands of land and marine species (NParks, 2018), it also has little remaining of the original plant and animal species (Britannica, 2020). Image from Britannica.  At almost 280 square miles, situated close to the equator, the climate is tropical, giving way to “... uniformly high temperatures and nearly constant precipitation throughout the year” (Britannica, 2020). In fact, the area receives so much rain, the country has developed catchment areas for the rain to collect and allows the country to use alternatively and when needed.  Image from PUB; Singapore’s National Water Agency.  With over 5.6 million people, the mostly urban environment doesn’t leave many natural places for plants and animals to call home. What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of life found within a geographical area. This includes “ …the genetic variation within species and all ecosystem processes” (Primack, 2014).
